Vital statistics (births, marriages & deaths) are collected by the provincial or territorial government.
Each province and territory has their own version of a vital statistics or civil registration act that governs when and how the province or territory required the registration of births, marriages or deaths. They also decide when, how or if these records are released to the public.
The years indicated in the chart signify when the province or territory officially started civil registration, and the last year that is available for public viewing. Vital records pre-dating the start of civil registration do exist, for additional information please visit the province/territory GenWeb.
