05-16-1898 John Watt, died at Hinchinbrook PQ, aged 87 years. A native of
Ardrossan, Scotland.By the death of John Watt, of heart failure, the last of the
old generation of Watts has passed away. He was born on November 01/1811 in
Ardrossan, Ayrshire, Scotland, and was the third son in a family of 11, four
daughters and seven sons. When at the age of 14, he was apprentice to a silk
Weaver, and for four years was engaged in weaving Paisley shawlsand plaids. When
he was 18 his elder brother, Andrew, was drafted for the army, and, to escape
this, Andrew and John sailed in 1829 for America to view the country, and to
record, as to be advised, the ability of the others coming to make a home in
Canada. They went to upper Canada, where John drove a stage for two years,
between Kingston and Gananoque Ont. A favorable account of Canada having been
sent home, the other members of the family came out, in 1831, to Montreal, and
John went to meet them, intending to take them back with him to upper Canada,
but, hearing of a place called Chateaugay Basin, his father went to see it, and
was so charmed with the beautiful appearance of it, that he could not be
prevailed upon to go elsewhere, so there was established the homestead of the
Watt's. Afterwards John took the position of Butler for Sir John Colburn, of
Montreal, and in a few years the rebellion of 1837 broke out , and, being a
trust servant and a good horsemen, he was sent by Sir John as a cavalier to the
front. He was present at the battle of St.Eustache, and although, in his later
years, his memory failed him regarding all recent events, he could, until his
last illness, relate incidents connected with that memorable battle. After peace
was restored, he worked for the company of Hector, Russell and McKenzie,
importers of cattle, who had in their employ a veterinary. Here he obtained a
lot of useful information, which was afterwards of great service to him and his
neighbors. He was always ready and willing to lead a helping hand to any who
required his assistance. In 1840 he bought the farm in Hinchinbrook on which he
spent the remainder of his life. It was then in standing Bush, but by dint of
perseverance, industry and self denial he felled the trees, cleared the land,
and made for himself and family a comfortable home. In 1843 he married Mary,
youngest daughter of the late Archibald Muir. Seven years later she died,
leaving him a son and three daughters. Her sister Janet then took up on herself
the care of the home and family and worked by his side all these years, doing
faithfully her duty by them, as if they were her own. Mr. Watt always had a
wholesome dread of weeds about his farm, and after he was unable to do the work,
every weed which he could find he cut it out. He was a member of St. Anders
Church, from the time he came here until his death.
