04-11-1907 (of interest) New steel bridge at Huntingdon, which replaces the old
wooden one above the dam of the grist mill. The span is 83 Feet ?, the width 22
feet and the Heights 26 feet. It consists of 16 panels each measuring 11 and
three quarter feet. The thickness of the trusses and their height give the
structure a massive and imposing appearance. It is extremely strong for a
country bridge being warranted to carry 60 pounds to the square foot. The bridge
would carry 100 in 80 times of dead weight without material deflection. The
floor has a 16 foot carryiage way, and a foot walk of nearly six feet. The
latter is a great improvement, which is appreciated by those whose residence is
our on the east side. There is some work to do on the approaches, which await
warm weather. The bridge was designed buy the provincial government engineer, L.
A. Vallee, and the iron work comes from the Fenix bridge Co. of Montreal PQ. At
a Cost of $7.300.00. The abutments were built by Thomas Chambers for $2.500.00.
There will be some extra outlay on the approaches. The hummocks seen below the
bridge are the remains of the old piers, which will be removed in the summer.

06-22-1907 (approximate date) John Hunter, died in Huntingdon PQ, of
complications from an earlier surgery, aged 59 years. In his removal, Huntingdon
has lost its most enterprising man of business. Eldest us on of George, and
grandson of his namesake, John Hunter, the first settler and first store keeper
of the village., circumstances made it advisable, on the premature death of his
father, that he should earn some money before settling down on the homestead. He
began store keeping in a small way in Bruce's store, and displayed an attitude
for business that brought success. Moving into what was then known as be
Cockburn property, he and his brother George combined store keeping with a
livery , and made money in both. His brother starting for himself, John kept on
at the Owens stand, and as his son's grew had the best of help. Farming was his
choice of a life occupation, and he retained the homestead expecting to retire
to it. Disappointed in that, he only sold it when he resolved to build a larger
store some six years ago. Trade grew with every extension, and on the grist mill
property coming on the market, he bought it, beleaving it would be a help to the
store. If Huntingdon had a representative of the strenuous life it was found in
John Hunter, for he personally superintended every detail of the growing
business which had many departments. For many years he was a member of the
council and when he died was chairman of the school commissioners he was also a
director of the agricultural society and president of the liberal association.
His three sons inherit the fathers aptitude for business, and under their
management it ought to know no falling off. The funeral took place on Tuesday
afternoon, and the attendance what was so large that the audatorium of the
Methodist Church, used for the first time since its renovation, was insufficient
to contain all.
