(A note of interest) Mr. N. W. Sparrow, manager of the local branch of the bank
of Montreal, returned home over the weekend from his trip to the southern
states. Upon the request of the gleaner, Mr. Sparrow conscented to pen a few
brief items about his trip which we feel certain will be read with much interest
by many of our readers. (Quote)
I left Huntingdon on the 29th January. It was a very cold day, thermometer
registering twenty degrees below. The next morning I arrived in New York where
it was much milder, and was able to take a ride on the upper deck of a fifth
Avenue bus. Also visited Wall Street, and the financial district, and as it was
my first visit to New York, it naturally interested me very much. I had a good
view of the city from the 60th story of the Woolworth building, said to be about
750 feet high. Leaving New York, friends were visited along the Delaware River.
At one point a monument marks the spot where general Washington crossed over
during the war of independents. This river winds through a lonely section of
dairy country and the farmers appeared to be quite progressive. My next stop was
in Washington for a couple of days. One morning was spent in the house of
representatives, and the other in the Senate. Vice President Daws was presiding.
The question of allowing national banks to open branches in cities was being
discussed in the house, while in the Senate a reduction of the income tax was
under debate, with Sen. Norris of Nebraska as the principal speaker. None of the
members appeared to be taking any interest in the debates. Several seemed to be
enjoying a good chew of tobacco, and were experts in hitting the cuspidor at a
good distance. The president is very seldom present at any of these meetings,
but confines himself to the White House where his duties are very heavy. A
memorial to Abraham Lincoln, situated on an artificial lake, was also worth
seeing. The building appeared to be perfectly white. His statute was placed in
the center and presented a very imposing figure. Another place of interest was
the national Museum where all kinds of automobiles and railway engines were
shown from their beginning, and marked a wonderful advancement of this equipment
in recent years. Washington was left behind at 3 p.m.. A blizzard was blowing
from the North. The next morning northern Florida was reached. In the vicinity
of Jacksonville. The day was warm and with flowers bursting into bloom, reminded
one of the month in June in Huntingdon. Close connections was made here for New
Orleans, 750 miles distant and which was reached the next morning at 730 a.m..
This city is very level the Mississippi. Years ago canals were dug in the center
of most of the streets and were used to drain the city of its surplus water. On
account of these canals the streets had to be made wide and remains so to the
present day. They canals are now all covered and are used by the street railway
for their right-of-way. Pumping stations are located every few blocks, and after
a rain our Kept busy emptying the canals into the river. On account of the wet
conditions of the land, the cemeteries are all built above ground. Each lot has
to the appearance of the small ball, foundations for buildings erected in the
city rest on the piles driven down to a great depth. The residence appeared to
take life easy, they remain up late at night and then sleep most of the morning.
The street railway officials are very polite. When you get on a car they say
good morning and when you leave they bid you goodbye. It is 2400 miles from New
Orleans to Los Angeles. There is not much to see between the two points. After
leaving the former city the entire train is ferried across the Mississippi. The
engine is placed in the center of the boat. The coaches are then run in on
either side. These engines are large oil burners and are run for 800 miles at a
stretch, the crews being changed probably every 250 miles. Owing to the depth of
mud in the river it has been impossible to get a foundation strong enough to
support a bridge. A lot of prairie is seen while passing through Texas. In
Arizona there is very low growth until the foothills are reached when some
distance we passed through a salt desert, and where at the time some 300 feet
below sea level. Our highest point reached in Texas was around 5000 feet, and
above the same in Arizona. Snow-capped peaks could easily be seen from both
these altitudes. It is very dry in both of these states. In some parts it has
not rained for seven years, and as a result has ruined many ranchers. At one
station we saw a large sign in front of a restaurant with the following, free
lunch served whenever in rains. We were informed it was a longtime since they
had to give any free meals. After passing into California and descending the
slopes into the Valley a wonderful changes is noticed. Everything is a green
from the winter rains. Peach and almond trees are in bloom. Ranches and orchards
are heavy laiden with fruit. Only a day was spent in Los Angeles. It was raining
so hard that points of interest could not be reached. A night's run brought us
onto the San Joaquin Valley. It is situated halfway between Los Angeles and San
Francisco and above 100 miles in land from the Pacific Coast. Fifteen hundred
dollars per acre for orange groves. Three weeks were sent in Porterville and
Exeter with friends. These towns are at the foot of the Sierra Nevada range. The
valley is noted for its oranges, lemons, grapefruit, olives, grapes and all
kinds of vegetables. Mixed farming is also carry Dawn. Hog and poultry raising
are important industries. Higher up in the Hills thousands of head of cattle are
fattened. Rain is badly needed in December, Jan. and February. This makes no in
the mountains and is used later in the summer to fill the irrigation ditches in
the Valley's below. During parts of the summer the temperature goes as high as
125. When it gets very warm a large number of the residence go up into the
mountains where their camps are located. An altitude of 5000 feet is quite
comfortable. Our ranches cannot be picked until they show a certain percentage
of sugar and are examined by government officials from time to time. He could
orange ranch is worth from fifteen hundred per and up. Leaving here two days
were spent with friends and San Francisco and Oakland Cal.. A motor bus trip of
three hours gave one a good idea of the important points of interest in and
around these points. From the top of the Twin Peaks, 1200 feet high, an
excellent view of the cities is obtained. Other points of interest are golden
Gate Park, the University of California, Berkeley, Piedmont, and the residential
district of Oakland. The principal street in San Francisco is market Street. On
itre fourlectric car lines. To a visa are owned privately and to by this city.
Both are said to be making a profit. Cable cars are operated on the side
streets, some of which are very steap. The trip up the Coast was made by rail.
The Sacramento River was followed for about 300 miles. A lovely view of Mount
Shasta was obtained. This mountain is about 15,000 feet high and is snow capped
most of the year. We appeared to be winding around it most of the day and
reached an altitude of 5000 feet. The roadbed could be seen below us on three
different levels and was well worth seeing. The sun shining brightly added much
to the beauty of the Hills. A couple of days were spent with friends in Kelso
Washington. Here are one of the largest sawmills in the world was visited. They
employ 2000 hands and turned out over a million feet of lumber daily. It to two
hours and a half to go through it with a guide. Logs of 10 feet in diameter were
handled automatically and very quickly. The sail on Puget Sound from Seattle to
Victoria and Vancouver was most enjoyable and as the day was clear the snow
capped mountains could be seen most of the way. Seattle is becoming quite a
seaport, it's beautifully situated and has a good Harbor. The trip to the
Canadian Rockies was also very arresting. Shortstops were also made at Kamloops,
Calgary and when up a. Nothing could be seen passing through the couriers as
they were for the most part covered with snow. We did noticed something,
however, and we are glad that we have never seen at around Huntingdon, on farm
after farm we saw implements left in the fields covered with snow. They appeared
to be left where last used and the custom was general for miles some miles, and
cannot help but cut short the life of the machine. There was very little snow in
Winnipeg. They have had a very mild winter. A few days were spent across the
border in northern Minnesota. This used to be good wheat section, but of late is
going more into mixed farming. We were sorry to see several small local banks
closed. They had loaned to heavily on farm property and were forced out of
business, showing to a great extent the advantages of our strong branch banking
system in Canada. Chicago, Detroit and Toronto were also visited. In all a
little over 9000 miles were covered. We were glad to get away and equally glad
to get back to work once more.
