Thursday, Jan 2/1890 John much the same. Jessie no better. She did not come
downstairs today. Her sister Angeline had the doctor last night. She had La
Grippe. It is pouring rain.
Friday Jan 3 Mrs. T. E. Graves spent the day here. Jessie came downstairs and
lay on John's bed on the two sofas. John went outside the first time since
Monday. I wrote to ________ at St. Martine. I got a letter from Anna mailed at
Cedar Falls and one from Aunt Tallie.
Sat Jan 4 - Ironed and cleaned up for Sunday. Tom went to Ormstown for
William.
Sun Jan 5 - Wm. And I went to church, it was communion Sabbath. Mrs. Watt
joined the church. I took cold chills and headache and came home real sick with
La Grippe and took a sweat and was very bad all night with vomiting or trying
to, which was as bad I thought. Aunt Betsy called a little while. I got up and
tried to get better and had to lie down again until bed time.
Mon Jan 6 - I got up but could not stay up. Had to lie on the sofa. We got a
telegram from George that Maude was dangerously ill. Kate & John Graves went
out. Mary is staying here. Tom also has the LaGrippe. I am very anxious about
Maude and think how sorry they will be lose her and Anna will be so sorry to
hear she is so sick.
Tuesday Jan 7 - Had a card from Emma that Maude was some better. She had had
congestion of the brain. Tom is here, not able to work and Mary is feverish. I
think she too is sick. I am trying hard to get better.
Wed Jan 8 - John went to Champlain. He met John & Kate coming home. Maude is
much better. Adam took dinner here on his way to Franklin. Mr. & Mrs. Charles
McFee took tea with us.
Thurs Jan 9 - Self not as well as yesterday. Did not go into the kitchen today.
Jessie did the work and Wm waited on me. John came home very late. Maude is
keeping better for which I am very thankful indeed. Anna has scarcely been out
of my mind today, oh how I miss her.
Fri Jan 10 - I got a long letter from Anna written from her new home. I mailed
Gleaners to Anna, Mrs. Harris, Mrs. Gordon, Mrs. Livingston with Anna's
marriage notice. Mr. Sellar very kindly sent me half a dozen. I have one to
Kate and one to Jessie. Kate took LaGrippe and Mrs. Breslin gave her an alcohol
sweat.
Sat 11 - Jessie went over and spent the day with Kate who is some better but
very weak. I am quite better but do not venture out yet. I pieced a block for
quilt - crazy quilt. Had a call from N. C. Parham. A very cold day. The
thermometer was 11 below zero in the morning.
Sun Jan 12 - Wm rode to church with John Graves. I was not able to go but rode
over to Kate's in the afternoon. She was able to sit up but very weak. John &
Jessie went to church in the evening. I miss Anna very much and feel lonely
tonight - more so than I ever have since she left.
Mon Jan 13 - Jessie washed. I did all I could to help her and John turned the
wringer and hung out the clothes, had to bring them in for the wind blew so
hard and it poured rain. We had to dry them in the house.
Tues Jan 14 - Anna's birthday. I received a letter from her and sent one.
Jessie ironed. We spent the evening at Sunnyside.
Wed Jan 15 - Wm took Jessie to Covey Hill to visit a week or two. I called on
Mrs. McGill a little while and saw the presents Bridget sent home. Kate came
and spent the afternoon. Etta called with Fred for a letter but would not come
in.
Thur Jan 16 - Benson and Angeline brought up Clark and Annie but Aunt Tallie
went down to visit them and they went home after dinner. Daniel came over in
the evening and invited them over next day.
Fri Jan 17 - After dinner Clark and wife went over to Daniels. Kate and the
children called in the morning and Kate got a letter that Maude was poorly so
Wm and I made arrangements to go to see Maude next day if the weather should be
favorable as the sleighing is good.
Sat Jan 18 - We started at half past nine for Champlain and got there ten
minutes past one. We found Maude a little better. Mr & Mrs Barber were there to
tea and spent the evening. We played dominoes a little while. I got a parcel
from T.S. McGilton.
Sun Jan 19. Wm & I went to Church with Emma. Mrs. Moore called in the
afternoon. Mr. & Mrs. Dixon called before the evening service about an hour I
went with to church and sat with Mrs. Dixon. They came back with me which was
very kind.
Mon Jan 20 - We left Champlain at light and got to George's at Covey Hill
before dinner. He had gone to Boston to see Tay who has had his eye removed.
Mary S. & Jessie were at St. Chrysostome. Aunt Mary was very poorly. Kate was
here when we got home and made the tea and did the wash up for which I feel
very thankful.
Tues Jan 21 - I wrote to Mrs. Gordon at Swan Lake and sent three dollars and a
half for their new church which I collected for it. John D. went with Tom to
Champlain for a load. I wrote to Emma. I received and wrote to Anna. Kate is
staying here tonight. We spent a pleasant evening.
Wed Jan 22 - Kate washed a few things for me. I kept Mary in the afternoon
while her Mother went to Quilting at Mrs. Breslin's. Kate helped me to make
pies and doughnuts. John got home from Champlain about four.
Thur Jan 23 - Wm went to Covey Hill to see George and hear from Tay who is
getting better he fetched over Jessie and Mary L. Edwards and we all took tea
or dinner with Kate it being Mary's birthday. She is three years old and we
spent a very pleasant evening. Wm had a call from the Rev Mr. Watt before he
came over.
Fri Jan 24 - Kate visited us in the afternoon. She made lemon pies. John and
Jessie went to Ben Johnson's party. Mary & I did not go. Tom came over a little
while in the evening. Sat Jan 25 - John McGilton came and brought me a present
from Anna, a silver thimble in a box and my initials on it - also some yarn.
After dinner Wm & I went with him to Benson's and staid to tea. We had a short
but good visit. Ben had La Grippe. Adam was getting better of it.
Sun Jan 26 - John & Jessie, Wm and I went to Church. Mary & I kept the house
and Kate's baby. Kate & Tom went to Church & took dinner here. Wm & I called at
Aunt Tallies. She & Gertie had La Grippe, also on Mrs. Parham who has the
measles. John & Tom went to Champlain. Took Mary home afternoon. Her hand was
sore. Kate stayed all night. Jessie went for a drive with R.C.M.
Mon Jan 27 - I got a letter from Emma and wrote to Anna. John got home from
Champlain about four o'clock. John Graves came back with them. Jessie spent the
afternoon and evening there when she came back informed me that they were bound
for the city next day.
Tues Jan 28 - Kate & Tom, John & Jessie with Mary & Anna Bruce went into
Montreal and had their photos taken. They got home at eight o'clock. I made
oysters for supper. Both Kate & Jessie remembered me when in the city.
Wed Jan 29 - William & self went to Covey Hill to see the two Mary's, who are
ill. Came around by the Flatts and had tea with Charles & Ann. James McCort &
Miss Allen married.
Thurs Jan 30 - Jessie ironed in the morning. We had a visit from Johnnie McFee,
John S. drew logs to the mill. It poured rain before dinner and we are losing
the sleighing. Wm & I intended visiting at Mr. Pettis this afternoon but
postponed it to some other day.
Fri Jan 31 - We washed ____ A.M. McGilson took dinner with us. I took Mary and
Anna Bruce while Kate went to St. Chrysostome with Etta Fulton. Jessie & I
called over to Sunnyside in the evening & also on Mrs. McGill.
Sat Feb 1 - John fixed up and drove off East. Malcolm McFee and sister Eliza
called on their way to brother Daniels. John McFee with them. We had Mr. John
Cameron from Dundee to dinner. Also a call from Wm. B. Johnston & Fred. I
called at Daniel's in the afternoon and sewed a row of blocks on my quilt.
Sun Feb 2 - Wm. Jessie & I went to church and heard Mr. Watt give an excellent
sermon. Kate & Tom came over and took tea and staid until eight o'clock. Jessie
went to church in the evening. We read Dr. DeWitt Tallmadge's trip to Palestine
and was greatly interested. I felt very sad all the evening thinking of Anna so
far away.
Mon Feb 3 - We washed. John got home in time for dinner. Brought me a letter
from Emma. I have been writing to Anna today. I made curtains for John's
wardrobe. It rained very hard in showers today and the snow is all gone.
Tues Feb 4 - It sleeted and rained all afternoon. Wm went to Ormstown to take
the train for Dundee. Jessie ironed. I pieced five blocks for a quilt. John
Graves fixed the table. I sent Anna a letter and papers to Stewart.
Wed Feb 5 - I got a letter from Tallie. Jessie & I visited at Sunnyside. The
wind was so strong it almost took us off our feet going over. John cut wood
under the shed and kept house. Twenty seven years ago this morning James Gordon
Keith died with Diphtheria aged six years. My oldest son.
Thurs Feb 6 - I wrote to Emma and made apple pies. Kate and the children
visited here. Jessie went to the Social at Mr. Stewarts in Rockburn. Silas
McDaved called to get a wagon and he left his cutter as the sleighing is gone.
Etta and Fred Fulton spent the evening here and we had a few words of a sort.
She was vexed at not being invited to Anna's wedding. I told her what I thought
and the least said is the easiest mended.
Fri Feb 7 - I received a letter from Anna and sent her one. Had a call from
Kate in the morning. Jessie went over in the afternoon awhile. John got home
from the woods about four o'clock. He got his own breakfast and went away
before we got up. Jessie & I spent a very pleasant evening, had an old
fashioned chat. She slept with me since Wm went away.
Sat Feb 8 - I got up with a sick headache. Jessie kindly did up the work and
let me sit in the rocking chair. The photos expected came and all very good. Wm
got home at dark having been away since Tuesday. We had oysters before going to
bed. Jessie & John made chocolate candy.
Sun Feb 9 - I went to church with John & Jessie. William kept house and got the
dinner. Jessie read and played the organ all afternoon by spells. After tea Tom
& Kate with the children spent the evening here. Jessie went to church. Mary
was lame had fallen and hurt her leg.
Mon Feb 10 - Jessie went to Rockburn with Kate & Tom to visit Mrs. Fergusson. I
busied myself all forenoon cleaning up dishes and the cupboards. After noon I
wrote to Anna. John went to Hemmingford with a load for Wm. McGill.
Tues Feb 11 - I received a long letter from Anna. Wm and I went to the Flatts
and took dinner at John McGee's in company with Chas & Anna. Malcolm and John
were both at home. We had a very nice visit. We got home at four. Kate was
here. John soon got home from Hemmingford. Ben & Mina Johnstone spent the
evening here.
Wed Feb 12 - I did not get a letter from Emma and was quite disappointed. I
wrote to her and sent our photos to Uncle Tay. Jessie went over to see Kate a
little while in the afternoon & I joined the blocks of crazy quilts together.
Thurs Feb 13 - Wm went to run a line down towards Ormstown. I went over to
Sunnyside for a little while. John took Jessie & myself up to hear the
Evangelists preach. Mr. Horner has a wonderful voice. Would like to hear him
again.
Fri Feb 14 - Valentine's Day. Sister Angelina's birthday. She and Benson took
dinner with us then they went to hear the Evangelists. George Graves came down
from the summit. I got a letter from Emma and one from Anna in with John.
Sat Feb 15 - After dinner Jessie went to Champlain with George. Tom took them
to Charitins co(????) Kate and the children came over. A very cold and
disagreeable windy afternoon. I sewed another row of blocks on my quilt.
Sun Feb 16 - Wm & I went to Church. The wind was piercing cold. John got the
dinner. It is so icy I am afraid to venture over to Kate's. I want to see the
children. I am very lonesome and miss Anna more since Jessie went away.
Mon Feb 17 - I got a telegram from Emma. She was sick and wished me to
immediately. It was sent on Saturday and as Jessie went home with George that
night I thought I would visit until I heard again. Wm went to Norton Creek this
morning and John helped me do a washing. Papa came home quite unexpectedly and
I was glad to see him. Eva and Charley called on their way from church. It is
snowing very fast tonight.
Tues Feb 18 - I ironed early in the morning. When the mail came there was no
word from Emma. I sent a letter to Anna and received one from her. After dinner
I made apple pies. Kate came over also Mr. & Mrs. Watt took tea with us. Quite
a pleasant afternoon. Ella McGill spent the evening here. I went to bed very
tired.
Wed Feb 19 - When the mail came, I got a letter from Jessie, Emma was better
but Wm & I went out to Champlain after dinner. Found her very poorly. The Dr.
had just left, said she had the dry colic and she was quite bad all evening.
Mrs. Parcheron called and I wrote a short letter to Anna.
Thur Feb 20 - I did not sleep any last night. I think the tea I drank at night
the cause. This is a very bad stormy day. Emma is some better but we can not
venture to face the storm home. The Dr called this morning. Jessie is kindly
doing all she can to help along. They cannot find a girl to hire. Maude teased
all day to go to Mrs. Parcheron's.
Fri Feb 21 - A very cold day. Emma is better and we are storm staid. The road
blocked up. Emma sat up in the parlor in the evening. George and I called on
Mrs. D. Moore. William & Jessie kept Emma company. Maude teased all day to go
to Mrs. Parcheron's.
Sat Feb 22 - It was very cold but we started early to get home. Came to
Hemmingford and got our dinner at McFee's. Got a few little things in the store
and then started again. Made another call at Mr. Willson's and got nicely
warmed, then rode comfortably home. The wind was not so high nor piercing. Kate
& Mary and Anna Bruce were here to greet us.
Sun Feb 23 - I kept the house and Anna Bruce, who is a dear little baby and all
the rest went to church. I miss Jessie so much especially on Sunday. Kate and
Tom went home before tea. Had a call from Sister Angeline & Charlie on their
way to church. John & I went to both churches. Heard Mr. Watt preach
Mon Feb 24 - Mrs. James Latham died this morning. I repotted my roses, arranged
the plants, brought some up from the cellar. Swept thoroughly and dusted the
parlor, my bedroom and dining room. William went to an Agricultural meeting at
Havelock. He drove me over to Sunnyside first. John came home from Ormstown and
I had to come right back. We had oysters for supper and I wrote to Anna. White
cow had a little calf.
Tues Feb 25 - The snow is going fast. After dinner I went over to Kate's and
intended going to brother Daniels, but could not get so much water on the road.
Came back, had a call from Etta Fulton & John Graves. John took me over to my
brother's to call on the bride in a sleigh. I commenced my Berlin wool quilt.
Wed Feb 26 - John went off for a lark, do not expect him back today. Tom
brought Kate & the children over. He came back to tea. Kate sewed on the
machine. I knit one block for quilt and eleven berlin wool blocks for crocheted
quilt. Tea meeting at Havelock. Fred Fulton called.
Thurs Feb 27 - I knit two blocks. Called over to Sunnyside. Mary was sick, I
think has got the measles. A great deal of water on the road. Had to pick my
steps. Rev. Mr. Watt called a little while. I am feeling very lonesome and I
hope Jessie will soon come back.
Fri Feb 28 - I did not get over to see Mary today. So much water on the road,
am not very well myself. Got a card from Jessie that Emma is better.
Sat Mar 1 - I have a cold in my head. Went over to see Mary in the afternoon
who is some better she did not have the measles. John went to the woods Wm and
self all alone. I got a letter in Kate's from Anna who is well. I am very
broken hearted tonight. Wm is at Reslins as usual.
Sun Mar 2 - Communion day in our church. I am sorry I was not able to go, have
pains throughout my breast. Wm and John went, I rode over to Kate's. We all
took dinner and tea there. I could not bear to come home. The house looks so
lonesome. John & Tom went to church in the evening. The roads are very rough
and frozen. Wagons are running.
Mon Mar 3 - Wm and John went to the council in the afternoon. There was no
licenses granted this year in Franklin. Tom brought Mary over to spend the
afternoon. John brought me a porous plaster. I put it on my breast which is
very sore. John alone quite a washing in the morning and the clothes dried
nicely. A clear cold day.
Tues Mar 4 - Wm started early to take the train to Dundee to meet Mr.
Farlinger. I got a nice long letter from Anna, and sent her one. Kate came over
after dinner. She made custard pies, fried some doughnuts and ironed. I am not
able to do much. John went to Franklin to see Mr. Watt. Kate, Tom and Mary Anna
Bruce spent the evening with me.
Wed Mar 5 - I've been alone all day. John & ________ are in the woods. Wm in
Dundee. Adam McGilton came before dark and stayed all night. He and I called on
Kate a little while in the evening and quite a conversation. Wm did not come
home, cold & pleasant.
Thur Mar 6 - John went to the woods, Adam went over and had dinner at
Sunnyside. He and Kate spent the afternoon here. Kate got the tea, then went
with John & Adam to Nelson Manning's to prayer meeting. Tom kept the two
children here. William came home at supper time. He washed the tea dishes. He
says it is the first he ever did. I am very poorly, have a severe cold and pain
my breast.
Fri Mar 7 - John went with the man to the woods. Adam went over to Daniel's to
his dinner, came back to tea. Wm got a letter from Anna. Aunt Eliza Malcolm and
Johnnie came and spent the day. She & Wm helped get dinner and we got along
nicely. I made scones for tea and together we made an old fashioned sweet cake.
John & Adam are spending the evening at Kate's. Wm and self are alone.
Sat Mar 8 - John went to Churubusco to meet Jessie. The train was one hour
late. They got home at eleven o'clock. I am glad to have her back again. Adam
stayed until nearly four o'clock. We had a call from John Graves who is
leaving. He took his furniture away from Sunnyside. Jessie went over to see
Kate a little, while I am still troubled with pain in my breast.
Sun Mar 9 - A bright pleasant day. The roads are smooth and dry, very little
snow to be seen anywhere. Wm and self went to church in the morning and John &
Jessie in the evening, also Kate & Tom. I kept the children. They were very
very good.
Mon Mar 10 - a lovely day, bright & clear. Jessie & Self went to the Flatts and
called on Mrs. & Mrs. Keith Gordon. We traded some at the store and got back to
Benson McGiltons for dinner and spent the day there. Adam and Charlie were both
at home. I had a good visit with Angeline. John went to Champlain with a load
of lumber for George. I wrote a letter to Anna. The roads are good.
Tues Mar 11 - I received a letter from Anna. Jessie washed. Uncle George and
Aunt Mary came in time for dinner. Mary is very poorly, her feet is swelled
some. She stays here until George and Wm come back from Huntingdon. John got
home from Champlain about five o'clock. Jessie went to Mrs. Ames social with
B.C.M. I wrote to Mrs. Hunkins?? McFee and Mrs. G. K. Edwards.
Wed Mar 12 - A very wet day Jessie ironed and put the lining and wadding in my
crazy quilt. After dinner I made custard pies and cookies. Wm & George did not
get back from Huntingdon until dark. Mrs. George not very well. I played some
pieces on the organ and had a nice visit with Mary.
Thur Mar 13 - George and Mary left about ten o'clock. Sister Angeline came. She
assisted me to tie & finish crazy quilt. Then we called over to Sunnyside and
had tea with Kate. Adam came back from Franklin, they went home before dark.
Jessie then went over for a call. I wrote three letters.
Fr Mar 14 - Wm churned. I made ten prints. Jessie went over to Kate's. We got
dinner then Jessie & Self visited Mrs. J. A. Manning. It is a lovely sunny
afternoon. They had tapped part of sugar bush, sap is running pretty good.
Wilson Kirkland fixed the arch chimney. John and Jessie went to Mr. Johnston's
in the evening. I wrote to Mrs. G. Gordon.
Sat Mar 15 - I wrote to Aunt Agnes and Jeanie Edwards. I called over to
Sunnyside and had a chat with Kate, John & Jessie. Went up to Aunt Sallies in
the evening. Kate & the children spent the evening with me. We had quite a good
visit. It is really cold & freezing hard.
(Weekly summary. I have written eleven letters this week and made two visits. I
had visitors three days)
Sun Mar 16 - A cold windy day and blustering all forenoon. John & Jessie went
to church morning and evening. Kate, Tom & the children spent the evening here.
We had ice cream. R.C.M. was here and some too. Mrs. Mason died, left a baby
girl five days old.
Mon Mar 17 - cold with high wind. Jessie at Sunnyside helping Kate get ready
for the social. I made four pies and did housework , had severe pain in my
breast. Wrote to Anna in the evening.
Tues Mar 18 - I got three no's off Peterson today. I made thirteen quarts of
ice cream for the social at Kate's in the evening. There was not as many as we
expected. Mrs. Mason's death threw a damper on it, but we made well considering
twelve dollars. Mr. Reed, Clara Manning, Eva McGilton, Miss Young added to the
amusement by reciting pieces and Mr. Robbie Pettis sang a song. The pie social
was a success.
Wed Mar 19 - Jessie helping Kate to put her house in order today I called over
a little while Tenese came at noon to work. I wrote to Emma. Jessie came home
at tea time.
Thurs Mar 20 - After dinner I went with Kate to see Miss Price and got a dress
fitted, a tea dress. Was very cold going up. Jessie kept the children. We got
home at dark. Jessie & John spent the evening at Aunt Angeline's, the McFee's
being away.
Fri Mar 21 - Wm churned before dinner. Malcolm McFee came, had dinner with us
and staid until four o'clock. we had a nice visit. John went to St. Chrysostome
and got some groceries. I bought from Mr. Boda ten lbs of feathers for 60 cts
per lb.
Sat Mar 22 - _________seven lbs of feathers over and put in Kate's bed as it
was not full enough when she got it. Jessie got dinner, did up the work and
then went over to Kate's. Wm went to Ormstown. John & Tom tapped the sugar
bush. I take weak turns and feel lonesome for Anna but I have much reason to be
thankful that Jessie is with me. She is kind and good. (weekly summary). 19.
Got three lbs of tea from Walter McFarlane 22. John tapped three hundred and
seventy trees. I have white & scarlet verbenas in blossom, white & pink
geraniums, starfish becoming all in bloom and lots of buds, roses are looking
well.)
Sun Mar 23 - Wm and I went to church in the morning. Kate & Tom took dinner
here after church. John & Jessie kept the children and got dinner ready. John
went to church in the evening and Jessie also went to the Methodist Church.
Mon Mar 24 - Felt very poorly. William tried to hire a girl could not get one.
I don't like to work Jessie so much. She is very good and obliging. I wrote to
Emma and Anna. A cold day with raw wind.
Tues Mar 25 - I got a letter from Emma and one from Anna with two photos, one
taken in her marriage dress, both are very good and well taken. Kate came over
a little while to see them. Mary knew Aunt Anna & Uncle Sheppard. Jessie got a
letter from Anna and a paper that Tandy was married. She did quite a washing.
Wed Mar 26 - John tapped more trees and Wm. Made a fire in the sugar house at
noon for the first and commenced boiling sap. A squally day, it rains and
snows, then the sun shines a little while. Had a call from Adam. Jessie did the
ironing. I put new feathers in my pillows home in my bed. I am a little better.
Jessie had a call from Mr. Brown.
Thurs Mar 27 - We sugared off twice today. Jessie is getting pretty well
initiated in the sweets of making sugar set. I have been mending & darning,
brushing and sponging all day nearly. Jessie & John gone to prayer meeting to
Mr. Daniel Tarham's.
Fri Mar 28 - Sugared off twice and made syrup twice. Kate came over to eat warm
sugar. Carried Anna, Mary walked. Snow coming from the east, it looks like a
big storm. Frank Cantwell had a sale.
Sat Mar 29 - Snowing still all day. The greatest storm of the season. John &
Tom went to Champlain in sleighs, lots of teams on the road. We filled all the
bottles with syrup and pasted paper over them. Sent Emma some syrup and sugar
and eggs by John. (weekly summary). Wm set a hen on Saturday 29. We made four
batches of sugar and syrup twice. We have two more calves.????????
Sun Mar 30 - Jessie, Kate and self went to Church and heard an excellent sermon
from Mr. Watt. It was a memorial service for Mrs. Mason. The church was full.
All the other denominations attended. Rev Mr. Poysen gave a prayer after the
service, Mr. Reed, a collegian gave a solo, also the choir.
Mon Mar 31 - John got home from Champlain, brought be two pretty shells. Jessie
called over to Sunnyside in the afternoon. In the morning I went with the mail
to Mr. Price's, got my dress fixed and came back with him.
APR Mon Apr 1 - I cut out and basted a jacket for myself. Kate and the
children called over a little while in the afternoon. I went in the evening to
the Methodist social with John, it being in the Town Hall. A lovely day, clear
and cold.
Tues Apr 2 - Had a busy morning. After dinner Miss Price called and fitted my
jacket. Jessie & I went up and visited at Mrs. Daniel Farham's, Mrs. Stewart,
had a pleasant afternoon. We started for Stacen's & Craik's, but were too late
starting. Jessie not feeling well, went to bed early tonight.
Thurs Apr 3 - I sewed up my jacket and we sugared off three times. Kate came
over, Jessie and I went down to the sugar house after tea. John, Jessie and
Self went to Nelson Manning's to prayer meeting. The minister did not come and
so we had a praise meeting. Visited the sugar house and saw their new
evaporator. Had a chat with Lydia and saw her album.
Fri Apr 4 - (Good Friday) Jessie & I made sugar four times. I made a layer
jelly cake. I sewed in the sleeves and put on the collar. The company expected
did not come. I wrote to Emma, sent papers to Anna.
Sat Apr 5 - Very busy all day, I finished my jacket. Miss White visited here in
the afternoon. Sugared three times and made syrup. Kate sent me a very nice
cake. Churned and let Kate have four and one half pounds. Jessie played. We had
a nice sing. John took Miss White home. A good sap day.
(weekly summary - I came near having a serious accident at the Town Hall
Tuesday night - one of the steps being broken, I went through and was not a
little hurt)
Sun Apr 6 - A beautiful Easter morning with high wind. Wm and Self, John and
Jessie all went to church. I walked over to see Kate & the children after
dinner a little while. I kept the children in the evening and let them go to
church. John went and Jessie went with a friend. A great sap day, buckets
running over.
Mon Apr 7 - Sugared off twice. I cut a pattern off from Anna Bruce's dress. I
wrote a letter to Anna. The roads are very bad. I got a letter from Mrs.
Tenny.
Tues Apr 8 - Tuesday I received letters from Emma and Anna. I went Anna a
letter, Jessie & John washed, I did housework and feel very tired. We sugared
off in the afternoon. Wm went to counsel. Tommy Rennie buried. A social at Mrs.
Paddock's. A pleasant day. Sap did not run much.98
Wed Apr 9 - Jessie ironed. John churned. I worked the butter. We sugared off
once and made syrup. Kate and the children called over a little while. Weather
not very pleasant. High wind.
Thurs. Apr 10 - No sugar to make today. I sewed part of the edging on my quilt.
Jessie & visited at Sunnyside all afternoon and had our tea. Fred & Ettie
Fulton spent the evening here and invited Jessie and I for tomorrow afternoon.
Fri Apr 11 - Kate called in the morning. She was very disappointed in not
getting a letter from Anna. Jessie & I knit on my quilt. John McFee and Adam
McGilton spent the afternoon and evening here. Adam & Self called at
Sunnyside.
Sat Apr 12 - Made sugar in the forenoon. After dinner we called on Mrs. Nelson
Manning to console with her on the death of her sister, Mrs. Nash. We then
visited Etta Fulton & had tea. Came home and got our men's supper, then called
at Mr. McGill's and saw Mrs. Roda and the baby. We spent an hour very
pleasantly.

Sun Apr 13 - A lovely day. Wm and self went to Covey Hills. We heard Mr.
Waddell preach an excellent, excellent sermon and the friends in their usual
way. I felt quite unwell while there and much worse after I got home. Kate was
here and relieved me some by hot applications to my throat & lungs. Jessie was
at church.
Mon Apr 14 - I am not very well, neuralgia troubling me throughout my chest and
shoulder but have to keep around. I got breakfast ready by seven o'clock.
Jessie is helping me to make syrup. It is a lovely day. Nice weather for house
cleaning. Mr. Breslin got a telegram that John was dead. Wm & I went over a
little while in the evening.
Tues Apr 15 - I am quite well again. John went to the summit with several
others to meet the corpse of John Breslin. Clara Manning came with the mail to
spend the afternoon. I sent a letter to Anna. Jessie, Clara & I went over to
Mr. Breslin's a little while. Came back & got tea. Then I went back and stayed
until eleven.
Wed Apr 16 - I went over & saw the funeral leave. Wm & Jessie went to the
funeral. John was a pall bearer. Aunt Angeline staid here and we kept Kate's
Mary & Anna Bruce. Benson & Angeline spent the day here. We had a good visit.
Thurs Apr 17 - We cleaned the chamber. A pretty cold day. Got rid of the
skimmings, put away some syrup. Jessie drove Kate up to Robert Fulton's. John
made boxes and packed sugar for the west. Jessie had some packed for Geo. V
wife.
Fri Apr 18 - I went over to Kate's in the forenoon and wrote a note to Anna,
enclosed it with Kate's. I received a letter from Anna in Kate's, and a letter
from Emma. John went to the summit with boxes. Kate spent the afternoon here.
Jessie & self knit 2 blocks each.
Sat Apr 19 - After dinner Jessie & Kate went to J. McFee's to visit after tea.
Wm and self spent the evening at Mr. Breslin's in company with Etta and Fred
Fulton, Mrs. Backman & Charley Childs. I knit 2 blocks and sewed another strip
on my quilt - all except 2 blocks.
Sun Apr 20 - Wm and self, John & Jessie went to church in the morning. Jessie
went at night also. John & I read a sermon of Talmages to Wm, had a call from
Mrs. Backman & Miss Maggie Breslin.
Mon Apr 21 - I got up early and got Wm his breakfast. He went to Ormstown and
took the cars for St. Martine to attend Delegates meetings. We did a washing &
had Mr. Watt & Mr. Johnstone to tea. Also a call from John Craik & Clara
Manning. Sent papers to Emma and Anna.
Tues Apr 22 - I sent a letter to Anna, also a box of cuttings slips of house
plants. I called on Mrs. Breslin and Kate. When I came home Ben & Minnie
Johnstone were here. I made tea, Kate made us a jelly cake which was very nice.
They left at eleven o'clock. I left the dishes until morning, something unusual
but I was very tired.
Wed Apr 23 - Wm went to St. Chrysostome to run a line for Mr. Rickey. Jessie &
I knit on my quilt. My limbs aching. Can scarcely go around. We both took a nap
before tea. We had jam cakes for supper. Wm came when tea was ready. Jessie
read me a story out of Peterson. It is ????????
Thur Apr 24 - Jessie & I went to Ladies Aid at Mrs. Coonley's. I called on Mrs.
G. Abbot, Miss Abbot was very ill. I also called on Mrs. N. Parham and saw the
new baby. We got home at dark. It was a lovely day. A friend called to see
Jessie and spent the evening. I bought a red table cloth.
Fri Apr 25 - Did various things around the house. Mary spent the day here.
Jessie & Kate went up to Franklin and called at several places. I have a cold,
none of us went to church meeting. I sat up late to add a bit to the length of
my Facinator and read the Gleaner.
Sat Apr 26 - Got up with sick headache, find my cold is no better after dinner
got ready and at three o'clock John & self started for Chateaugay. We called at
the Lines and traded some at Mr. G. Neills. The wind was too high to be
pleasant driving. Got to Mr. Roberts at six. Saw Dr. & Mrs. Whitehead &
Gordon.
Sun Apr 27 - I slept with sister Susan and got up with a headache which wore
away by church time. We all went to church and heard their new minister. Susan
and I went home and took dinner with Alvira. We had strawberry short cake. John
came. We called at Mr. Hall's before we left Chateaugay. Got home at six, we
did not get wet.
Mon Apr 28 - Monday, got up feeling well. Wm got me some rich earth and I fixed
my plants and got dinner. Jessie & John washed the sap buckets, then went to
Covey Hill. The girls were not at home. They came home early.
Tues Apr 29 - I sent a letter to Anna and kept the baby and Mary. Kate & Jessie
went to St. Chrysostome. I made cookies and Gooseberry Layer Cake. Invited
Maggie Reslin & her cousin, Mr. Childs. Kate & Tom to spend the evening, which
they did. Mary stayed all night.
Wed Apr 30 - John took up the dining room and my bedroom carpet. We cleaned the
office and worked hard. John & Jessie called on Miss White at Mrs. Dunn's. Wm
had a call from Colonel Rogers & the Priest Murphy from Cherubusco.
May Thur May 1 - Cleaned the dining room cupboard and scoured all the silver,
dusted and washed woodwork, washed all the china & stoneware. Wm. Had another
call from Mr. Murphy. Went up to Mr. Abbott's with him. Wm gave Uncle George a
swarm of bees. I was too tired to go to prayer meeting. John went alone to Mr.
Manning's.
Fri May 2 - Continued house cleaning. Finished my bedroom after dinner. Jessie
went with Kate to visit Sister Angeline and visited Aunt Betsy and sewed two
blocks on my quilt. They came home early. Tom & John did not go down. A fine
warm day.
Sat May 3 - I dressed and stuffed the fowl. Made custard pies for Sunday
dinner. Jessie mopped the kitchen, we had a tea dinner. Wm & John were away. We
knit on the quilt in the afternoon. A warm wind and looks like rain. I raked
the front garden a little bit.
Sun May 4 - We all went to church and took communion. John joined the church.
Mrs. Breslin kept the children for Kate & she & Tom went too. They came here to
dinner & tea & spent the evening. It rained all day. Jessie had a beau, we had
a good sing. Mon May 5 - John took the honey from sixteen hives. I worked at it
all day and we all went to bed tired. I called on Kate a few minutes to see
the babies dress. Anna sent it. Wm went to council.
Tues May 6 - Cleaned up the kitchen, put away eight pails of honey. Jessie &
self went over to Kate's and knit a couple hours, had a chat. There is quite an
excitement in the neighborhood about Mr. Benwa's death. Mr. McGill called.
Wed May 7 - In the first place, did a big washing. Cleaned John's room and the
parlor. John took up and put down the carpet and helped all day. Wm ran a line.
George & Maude came after dinner. George went to Ormstown. Jessie and John had
a good sing after all was done. We are getting on beautifully with the house
cleaning.
Thur May 8 - Maude went home. John put down the dining room carpet. After
dinner Jessie & I went to the Ladies Aid at Mrs. Gentle's, had an excellent
time. Coming home we met John going to prayer meeting. R.C.M. & Jessie went
driving.
Fri. May 9 - Jessie & I cleaned the stoves and whitened the kitchen. Did not
finish washing the woodwork. Left it for another day. A wet afternoon. I put my
Tuber roses and gladiolas in the hot bed. Wm. Churned, Tom went to Hemmingford.
John spent the evening with Kate.
Sat May 10 - Finished house cleaning & went over to Kate's twice. I made her a
pair of pillow cases. Wm & John got out the beeswax in its rough state to be
boiled and strained another day. Transplanted some potatoes. I made a raisin
cake, custard and cream pies. It rained a little while in the morning.

Sun May 11 - All went to church in the morning. I went again in the evening
with John and heard Mr. Craik preach.
Mon May 12 - Kept baby & Mary for Kate, who is house cleaning. I went over in
forenoon awhile. Then Jessie & I called over in the evening. We took the
children home.
Tues May 13 - John & Jessie went to Alburgh. I spent part of the afternoon with
Kate. They were getting the carpet down in dining room.
Wed May 14 - I made two shirts for John. Kate came over to stay the evening
with me. We had a call from Uncle George with bad news, which surprised us not
a little. Wm & I spent a miserable night and scarcely slept any.
Thur May 15 - Had a nice lot of butter our last churning, sending milk to the
factory now. Wm & I took tea with Kate. She came home with me. We had a call
from Aunt Betsy. I had a note from Sister Angeline. John & Jessie got home
little after eight o'clock.
Fri May 16 - Jessie & self knit on my quilt & sewed on five pieces. I covered
the banner screen to be used in the kitchen. Read Emma's letter sent by John
and ate an orange she sent me. Jessie & I had a glass of lemonade.
Sat May 17 - After doing up the Saturday's work frying doughnuts, baking for
Sunday's dinner, cooking beans, we knit five pieces for my quilt. I sewed them
on. John painted the kitchen floor. Wm & self intended going to Covey Hill but
the wind was high. Very cold & showery, the first thunder this season.
Sun May 18 - We all went to church in the morning. There was no service in the
evening. John & Tom went to hear Adam preach in the Methodist church, also
Jessie & Robbie. Kate & Tom took tea here & Kate spent the evening. Wm & I went
down to see Mr. Cassidy before tea. He will be buried in the morning at eight.
Mon May 19 - Wm & self went to Mr. Cassidy's funeral. After dinner went to
Covey Hill, had tea. Found Mr. Fergusson & Tina here when we got home. Kate &
babies also. I wrote to Emma & Anna partly to be ready to mail tomorrow.
Tues May 20 - Jessie & I knit. It poured rain all day. Wm could not go to hear
Mr. Green in the evening. I sent a letter to Emma & Anna.
Wed May 21 - A beautiful morning. The sun is shining. I put out my verbenas and
a few geranium. Sewed another strip on my quilt and made an apron for Mary &
called on Mrs. McGill. Wm sewed some beet seed.
Thurs May 22 - Wm & John went up to the mill & Tom to work. Eliza O'Neill &
Louise Gordon visited here until after dinner. Then they went to Kate's also
but Eliza & Tena visited there in the afternoon. Jessie & I went to the Ladies
Aid at Mrs. Taddock's. we called on Mrs. Canwall, Mrs. Haire & Mrs. Dunn. Got
home at dark.
Fri May 23 - Jessie & I went down to Sister Angeline's for a two hour visit,
when we came home Wm. thought we had better go to see Emma at Champlain in case
it might rain tomorrow. We left home after two and reached there before seven.
Sat May 24 - Wm & George went a fishing. I was very poorly all forenoon. About
three Emma & I went shopping. I visited all the Milliners shops and got myself
a bonnet. Mrs. Moore called in the evening. Also John Graves. Wm & George did
not get home until after eleven at night.
Sun May 25 - Emma & self went to hear Mr. Dixon in the Methodist Church. He
called in a while, we had a little chat. The wind was very high all day. We
came home in the afternoon. Mr. Muir & Mrs. Watt changed pulpits today. John &
Jessie attended morning & evening.
Mon May 26 - I feel very tired today but have done several odd jobs. Sowed a
few seeds and set out a few flower pots. Had a few light showers this
afternoon. It is quite warm. Tom helped John to harrow. Wm. Sowed oats. He also
found my silver thimble in the lane that Anna lost last summer when milking.
Tues May 27 - Jessie & I went up to the Frontier. Called on Mrs. Abbott, saw
her daughter who was sick. Then called on Mrs. Watt & baby, who is a nice
little chap and nine days old. We took dinner with Mrs. Gentle. We got home
before three. Kate called over with the children a few minutes. I had a letter
from M. G. McFee.
Wed May 28 - John painted the stoop, I put out more houseplants. Wm planted the
oleander in the ground.
Thurs May 29 - I worked in the flower garden, changing the pots, giving fresh
earth. Was up early. Jessie spent the day with Kate. John & Tom were at the
Elms all day. In the evening I kept baby Anna Bruce. Kate & Jessie went to
prayer meeting at N. Manning's. a beautiful moonlight night. Mr. ______ Pettis
died.
Fri. May 30 - Put out all my plants except two. Washed windows. Jessie ironed.
Cut out a wrapper for mornings. Wm not very well, sent to the Dr. for some
powders & pills.
Sat May 31 - I basted up my wrapper, swept and dusted my bedroom. After dinner
Wm & I went down to Mrs. Pettis a little while. Got home to tea. John & Jessie
went up to Mr. Fulton's in the evening. Kate & children came over. Mrs. George
Pettis & baby died.
Sun Jun 1 - We went to Mr. Pettis funeral. There was sixty carriages. We took
dinner at John McFees & got home early. Wm not feeling well, went to bed
early.
Mon Jun 2 - Wm. Went to council. I visited at Mrs. Manning's. we took tea there
and had a nice visit. Aunt Betsy called in the evening, quite cool. Tues Jun 3
- I got a letter from Emma & Mrs. Monteath. I sent a letter to Anna & Emma.
Made roly cakes, whitewashed the fence and did several odd jobs.
Wed Jun 4 - It rained all day. Wm went to Huntingdon. Kate came over and baked
for the Ladies Aid. Jessie assisted. I sewed some on my wrapper.
Thur Jun 5 - John went to Cherubusco for Miss Vosburgh. A heavy rain prevented
many coming to our Ladies Aid, we only made a dollar. Spent the evening
pleasantly. The young folks played charades & we had some fine singing &
playing.
Fri Jun 6 - After dinner, Jessie & Miss Vosburgh went over & visited Kate at
Sunnyside. I went over a little while in the evening. Wm & I came early. We
just got in when it poured rain. The weather is very cool.
Sat Jun 7 - The young folks went to the Chasm at Chateaugay. Kate had dinner
with us. I finished & sewed another strip on my quilt and had the supper ready
for them when they came. Quite cold & showery.
Sun Jun 8 - John, Miss Vosburgh & Jessie went up to the Methodist Church. Our
minister is in Kingston and we had no service. After dinner John took Miss V
home & Kate & I went down to sister Angeline's and called on Mrs. Almon. Cold &
high wind.
Mon Jun 9 - I made a nightdress & knit one block. Jessie knit one also. She
called over to Sunnyside in the afternoon. I had a letter from Covey Hill. Aunt
Mary not so well. I had a letter from Emma. John got home at two o'clock.
Tues Jun 10 - I wrote to Anna & Emma. Received a letter from Tallie. Fixed Wm's
pants and knit a block. Adam called & invited us to Eva's wedding. Kate called
over in the evening.
Wed Jun 11 - We ironed. Wm. Went to Huntingdon. A very warm day. Jessie & Kate
visited Mrs Dunn. Very warm day, thunder & lightning in the evening but no rain
until morning.
Thur Jun 12 - Rain commenced before seven with very high wind. Jessie spent the
evening at Kate's. Fred & Ella Fulton were there. A very wet dark night. I had
a letter from Emma that she would be at Cherubusco Saturday morning..
Fri Jun 13 - Wm came home in time for dinner. A very wet day. He could not
work. Afternoon I kept the children for Kate. She & Jessie went up to the
School Examination. I have sewed on another strip on my quilt. We have a fire
in the dining room. I got a letter from Anna.
Sat Jun 14 - John went to the station for Geo. & Emma & Maude. A very wet day.
Had Tom & Kate for tea.
Sun Jun 15 - Wm & Self, Emma, George, Tom, Kate & John went to church in the
morning. Jessie kept the children. She went in the evening with R.C.M. Geo. &
Emma went down to Aunt Angeline's. saw Etta Almour & the braws bridal truso
etc.
Mon Jun 16 - After dinner Emma & self visited Elija Gordon on Shovelin at the
St. Antoine Abby. Ripped my silk dress & cut a jacket. I wrote to Anna quite
late in the evening. Kate & Jessie went to St. Chrysostome in the forenoon. We
kept Mary & Anna Bruce.
Tues Jun 17 - I got Miss McGill to make my black silk shirt. A very warm day.
We had a heavy shower in the evening. Election day in Franklin. Dr. Cameron had
the victory over Saunders. Geo came in the evening.
Wed Jun 18 - I went to Sister Angeline's and helped to set the table for Eva's
wedding. Called for my shirt coming home. Was very glad and pleased to have it
done. Got ready and went back to the wedding. Clark's daughter Mrs. McKee had a
son.
Thur Jun 19 - Did not get much sleep. Had to rise early. Wm went near
Huntington to survey. Emma, Jessie & self went to the Ladies Aid at Mrs. De
Shaws. The roads were good and the day fine.
Fri Jun 20 - Received a letter from Anna and I sent her one. Emma & I had tea
with Kate. Mr. T. E. Graves went to Champlain. Kate & the children came home
with us to remain all night. John & Jessie went for a drive in the evening. A
fine day.
Sat Jun 21 - Emma finished my silk jacket, ready for the down. We had Mr.
Coonly & Gentle for dinner. Mr McGilton & Mrs. Almour for tea. George came with
Tom in the evening. Wm came just after supper. A very warm day. (weekly summary
- Eva McGilton was married on the 18th of June 1890. Mrs. McKee had a young son
on the 18th of June 1890. George went to Champlain with the Rev. Mr. Watt, came
back Saturday with Tom)
Sun Jun 22 - Wm & I went to church. We took Mary with us. Maude who went with
John & Jessie came back with us. Emma & George kept house & got the dinner
ready. In the evening, Emma went with Kate & I went with John to the Methodist
Church to hear Adam preach his farewell sermon.
Mon Jun 23 - Washed. Uncle George & Tay came to dinner. William was not at home
and did not see them. George went home with Tay. Tom sent them to the steam
mills. William got home to tea. Emma made me Rhubarb pies.
Tues Jun 24 - Emma and Jessie ironed. I got the dinner. A very warm day. I
changed my flannels for cotton underwear last night. Wm went to Covey Hill to
see Tay. I called at Kate's, saw Mrs. Wallace Gordon.
Wed Jun 25 - Emma spent the day at Kate's. made her a dress. I knit & finished
another row on my quilt. Jessie & John went in the evening to Mina Johnston's
wedding. I entertained Maude and Mary in the afternoon. Had a swarm of bees,
second swarm.
Thur Jun 26 - Emma, Maude & self went to St. Chrysostome. Had dinner with Eliza
O'Neil on our way. Spent the afternoon & had tea at Mr. M McFee. Miss Monteath
went with us to call on Mrs. John Young. Came back and stayed all night. In the
morning did our shopping. Called on Christy and dinner with Miss Monteath,
visited Mrs. J. Boyd. Called on Miss Stewart, got home at dark
Fri Jun 27 - Jessie & John had not got home from the picnic at the rock when we
got home but came shortly. The horse ran up to the lane with the carriage but
did not break it. Emma had a race for her, then Wm. came and unharnessed her.
We got to bed late. I helped Jessie to pack her valise.
Sat Jun 28 - Wm took Jessie to Cherusbusco. She went to Bowmanville to visit
her Mother's relatives. She expects to come back in five weeks I had quite a
busy day. Emma helped to get things in order. John & Tom went to St.
Chrysostome after tea. George came very late, walked from steam mills.

Sun Jun 29 - Maude went to church with Wm & I. John did not go to church in the
morning. Emma & George kept house & had dinner ready. Kate & Tom took Mary &
Anna who were very good. Anna's first time to church. John went to Rockburn in
the evening to church.
Mon Jun 30 - Miss Monteath & Jessie & A____Tate visited here, also Kate & the
children. Emma & self cut out shaker flannel in the forenoon. Wm ran a line &
got home at dark. John got his overalls cut at St. Antoine. The warmest day of
the season so far.
JULY Tues Jul 1 - William went to Dundee after noon. I washed the flannels. A
very hot day. Emma & I wrote to Anna. I sewed a little on my flannels.
Wed Jul 2 - Emma and I kept Anna Bruce and let Kate go to Ormstown with Tom &
John. I washed white clothes. It rained hard all afternoon the sun came out. It
was fine. We had a call from Jennie Fulton.
Thurs Jul 3 - I gave up going to Ladies Aid, it is so hot. Emma & self sewed on
shakers flannel in the afternoon, Emma went to Kate's for tea. Wm came home
from Dundee after supper. In the evening, Emma & self called on Mr & Mrs.
McGill. Had a call from Mr. & Mrs. Frank Cantwell & Miss Martin.
Fri Jul 4 - Emma & I went to the store & Maude too to Franklin. We called on Mr
& Mr Watt, Mrs. Rodgers, Mrs. Dunn, Miss Fulton, Mrs. Lovejoy and got home in
time for dinner. Had a letter from Anna. Emma & Kate and the children visited
Mrs. Fryer in the afternoon.
Sat Jul 5 - John took Emma & Maude home. Wm went to St. Chrysostome. I was not
very well. Had a sore throat but I managed to put the house in order, dusted &
swept. Then had cold chills and spent a miserable night.
Sun Jul 6 - Not well enough to go to church. I had to lie nearly all day, had a
very bad headache. Kate came over, she & Tom got the dinner and did the work.
She brought a strawberry shortcake & roasted beef. Tom & baby are something
like I am - sick. A cool day. We miss John & Jessie.
Mon Jul 7 - I am little better but feel miserable yet, have a cough today to
help along. Wm could not leave as he intended too, John got home at tea time.
Mon Jul 8 - Wm went to Roxham. I am little better. I sent a letter to Anna. Not
able to go into the kitchen to do anything. Handkerchiefs are in great demand.
Tues Jul 9 - Sad & lonesome. Wm came home in the evening. John went to Miss
Town's wedding. My head is bad. I am sick all over.
Wed Jul 10 - I got out to the kitchen and helped to get breakfast. Washed
myself & nine handkerchiefs & ironed them. Made cookies. Mary visited me all
day, says when she gets old like grandma, will make cookies too.
Fri Jul 11 - I was pretty well in the morning, in the afternoon Ellie Fulton
took me over to Kate's in her wagon. Mary had got hurt. They sent for the Dr &
he bandaged her arm. It was only sprained. John brought me home in the Dr.
carriage. Had cold chills. Not so well.
Sat Jul 12 - Worse all day until near dark. Head felt better. Bought a few
raspberries.
Sun Jul 13 - In the morning just as bad as ever, my head is awful. Wm & John
went to church after they did up the work. Aunt Angeline called on her way home
from church and suggested horseradish leaves on my neck & feet. Kate got tea
and did up the dishes.
Mon Jul 14 - No better until three o'clock. Mrs. McGill called. Kate came over
& did the raspberries morning & evening I got quite well before bed time. I
wrote part of a letter to Anna. Very warm. John's birthday. He went to
Cherubusco in the evening. My head very bad.
Tues Jul 15 - I think I am a little better but far from being myself. I am
constantly using my pocket handkerchief. Had a thunder shower this morning. It
is very warm John commenced haying. Kate made my raspberry jelly at her house.
Put hot hops on my head all afternoon & night.
Wed Jul 16 - I got up quite well in my head, until ten o'clock, was very much
worse. Put on mustard hops & warm clothes until it got a little easier before
one, I stoned a few cherries in the morning. Kate came over & made four quarts
of preserves. I got easier again at night. Have to keep very warm. John brought
me a nice bunch of strawberries on the stems.
Thurs Jul 17 - Fixed my calico dress. My head little better. Have to keep very
still. I am keeping it tied tight with a bandage around it. I helped to stone
two pails of cherries. John helped all the evening. It rained very heavy.
Angeline & Benson called coming from Chateaugay. Uncle James died two years ago
today.
Fri Jul 17 - I was able to do considerable today. I went upstairs and made
John's bed, the first time for a week. Maggie Breslin is doing our washing &
ironing at her home. Kate came over and made twelve and a half quarts of cherry
preserves, eleven lbs of white sugar, six of maple. I made some cordial.
Sat Jul 19 - A little better, worked a little all day. I made two quarts of
black raspberries, at least, and canned them. Kate & Tom went to Champlain
after dinner. Wm had a call from the valuators at night. Mrs. McGill called. I
took suddenly worse & suffered all night with neuralgia in my breast and side.
Wm did all he could to relieve me. I went back to my flannels again.
Sun Jul 20 - I got easier at daylight, got up and dressed but my side bad all
day. Had a call from Benson & Charlie McGilton. They brought me some Lady
Slipper. I hope it may do me good. Showery all day. Wm could not go to church
and leave me. John went three times. He took dinner at Merritt's. I am so
lonesome for Anna.
Mon Jul 21 - I am quite easy this morning but weak. I had a call from Ella, she
started a fire to make me a cup of tea. John & Wm are busy at the hay. I am
doing what I can. John had a letter from Jessie, I answered & said for her to
come the time she said. Aunt Betsy came over & set a couple of hours in the
evening.
Tues Jul 22 - Wm went away below the creek some place to work. John busy at the
hay. He wrote Anna a letter, I put in a bit. I wrote to Emma and Kate together.
Wm Watt called in the evening & his niece from Kingston.
Wed Jul 23 - Aunt Agnes and her two sons, Harry & Athol came and only stayed to
dinner, then went to the Flatts to Anna's. Wm came in time for dinner. Harry
took photos of the house. I knit three pieces for quilt. I am feeling much
better. We had a good visit.
Thurs Jul 24 - I sent a letter to Kate & Emma. I mopped the kitchen, canned
black raspberries. Had a call from Uncle Benson. Knit two pieces for quilts.
John went to prayer meeting.
Fri Jul 25 - Made gooseberry jelly & raspberry pies. Had garden peas for dinner
& new potatoes & veal. Knit two pieces for quilt & did all the housework.
Mashed six quarts of blackberries for cordial.
Sat Jul 26 - Made spiced currants, currant pies, jelly cakes & a tea dinner.
John & Tom went to the rock. Wm went to Ormstown to meet Jessie. I had supper
ready for them and glad to see her back again. Tom had supper with us.
Sun Jul 27 - We all went to church. I was very tired, did not think I was so
weak. Was glad to get home & lie down. Mr. Leet from Montreal addressed us and
the Sabbath school children. Jessie did not go to church at night. Had a friend
call. John & Tom went. I felt very poorly. Went to bed early.
Mon Jul 28 - Very hot day. Had a call from Ella this morning. Tom is helping
John at the hay. I strained the blackberry cordial and wrote to Anna. Had a
call from brother James Merritt in the evening.
Tues Jul 29 - I made huckleberry pies & cookies. Aunt Angeline & Aunt Eliza
came before dinner and spent the day. The picked a few currants. We had heavy
thunder showers. Wm picked a few blackberries in the evening. Brother James
came and stayed all night. The hottest day of the season so far. "Ther 87.
Wed Jul 30 - Brother James stayed all day. Wm went to the Flatts. We picked
black currants. We played a few games of dominoes. Jessie & I rode over to
Sunnyside with the milk man. I wrote to Aunt Sallie. Brother Clark's birthday.
Thurs Jul 31 - James spent the day at Daniel's. We expected Charles & Ann. We
had heavy showers in the morning. Jessie & I knit. Tom went to Clinton Mills
for Kate. She did not come. Wm. picked some black berries. James went down to
Benson's.
Fri Aug 1 - A beautiful day. Charles & Ann spent the day here. Tom went to
Champlain after noon. John & Jessie went to the prayer meeting at Mr. Watt's. I
called on Aunt Betsy and Mrs. Breslin.
Sat Aug 2 - John went to Alburgh. Jessie and I visited Eva and then went over
to Kate's and fixed up a little for her home coming.
Sun Aug 3 - Wm., Jessie, & I went to church. A very warm day. Tom & Kate with
the children came about half past three. We were delighted to see them. After
tea we went over with them a little while.
Mon Aug 4 - very warm. Too hot to sleep last night. Thermometer 90 today at
half past two. I went raspberrying in the evening with William and picked a few
currents later on.
Tues Aug 5. Made current jelly in the morning & had a call from Ada or Mrs.
Rogers. Very warm all day. A thunder shower in the evening which cooled the
air. Etta & Fred called, invited Jessie & I up Thursday to meet the two Mrs.
Rogers.
Wed Aug 6 - Wm went to Therington. I went over to Kate's. Had dinner. She is
washing John & Jessie washed early this morning. I am in trouble somewhat -
wishing I could see my way clear which I hope too in time. We had the two Mrs.
Rogers to tea.
Thur Aug 7 - Jessie ironed. She got a letter from Sallie. I fixed a shirt for
John and sewed & mended all forenoon. A lovely day, not so warm as last week.
Jessie & I visited at Etta Fulton's with the two Mrs. Rogers & Miss Fulton, Mr.
Manning called. In the evening I called on Mrs. Lovejoy.
Fri Aug 8 - Mrs. Manning & Clara spent the afternoon here, also Kate & the
baby.
Sat Aug 9 - I felt very poorly all the forenoon and decided to go to Boston for
a change hoping it will do me good. Wm & John are both willing, Jessie is to
accompany me. She and Kate spent the afternoon at Mrs. Rogers being invited.
Sun Aug 10 - We all went to church and heard Mr. Dixon preach. I called over to
Sunnyside in the afternoon. Kate came over in the evening. We had a call from
Aunt Angeline & Charley on their way to church in the evening.
Mon Aug 11 - John took Jessie & self to Chernbusco for a trip to Boston, where
we arrived at nine o'clock. Tay met us and we rode in an electric car to Mount
Vernon. Agnes was waiting to receive us. We had telegraphed them from St.
Albans.
Tues Aug 12 - We saw the President Harrison and the Grand Army March. A sight
worth seeing. The procession lasted over six hours. Agnes & I went home, did
not see it all, but saw enough. Sat on Commonwealth Avenue where we had a good
view.
Wed Aug 13 - I stayed in all day. I was very tired and I wrote to Wm. Cool &
pleasant. The rest all went out to see the grand sights. So many visitors in
the city.
Thurs Aug 14 - We visited Mount Auburn Cemetry. Aunt Agnes, here two sisters,
Jessie & I. We went on the electric cars, a long ride and saw many notable
places. The elm tree in the middle of the street, Washington reclined under.
Also the house that Longfellow lived and died in at Cambridge. We saw his grave
and I picked a piece of ivy off it. I did not go up the Tower, not being able.
Went to the Band Concert on the Common. Walked through the public gardens. They
were fine.
Fri Aug 15 - Saw the Harvard Institute. We went to the Revere beach and saw the
tide come in and go out. The salt water was a pretty green color. I enjoyed it
very much. We went to the Ferry on the street car, then took the steam car
quite a long distance. Tay carried a lunch basket, which we did justice to. I
got a letter from Wm and one from Emma. Went to a colored prayer meeting with
Mrs. Johnson, Agnes sister.
Sat Aug 16 - Tay & I went to the stores while the others all went to see Mr.
McCalum & bride start for Turkey as missionaries. After dinner we visited the
museum, but I could not half enjoy it, not being able to walk around up & down
stairs. Agnes & I went home sooner than the rest. I wrote to Wm, Emma, Anna,
Kate & John.
Sun Aug 17 - I did not go to church in the morning. All the others did. Miss
Clark came to tea and we went to the Episcopal Church in the evening.
Afterwards to the colored Methodist church, it being near at hand.
Mon Aug 18 - I remained in the house all day, packed my valise, sent Anna a
letter and handkerchief. The rest visited the stores and places of interest.
Tues Aug 19 - Tay saw us on the train for home. We left Boston at half past
eight in the morning and reached Champlain and eight o'clock, a long tiresome
ride. George met us and I had a ride up in a fine carriage. It was pouring rain
& Emma gave us a good welcome. Had tea all ready for us.
Wed Aug 20 - Emma and Maude came to the depot with us. The train was one hour
late at half past nine. We reached Churubusco where John met us and we got home
to an early dinner. Kate & the children were here. We found all well & in good
condition. Uncle Benson & Aunt Angeline called.
Thur Aug 21 - Wm took and early start to Huntingdon. Brother Charles took
dinner with us. John, as well as myself, not very well. I went to bed early, we
had a heavy rain in the evening.
Fri Aug 22 - Wm came home about ten o'clock. we were invited to Uncle John's
for tea & visit Catherine. We went, we met Charles & Anna there. Mr & Miss
Gowdry there too. We came home quite early. Jessie & I spent the evening alone.
Sat Aug 23 - Invited the two Miss Fulton's for tea & made a sponge cake &
finished sewing the lace on my quilt. Charles & Ann came to dinner. Had been at
St. Chrysostome. I had great pain through my breast and shoulders after dinner.
Jessie finished the last block & sewed it on. The quilt is done. I am troubled
with neuralgia.
Sun Aug 24 - I am quite better. A very wet day. Only John & Jessie went to
church. Kate called over a little while. A wet evening.
Mon Aug 25 - I called on Mrs. Breslin & Harden, also on Kate. Had a call from
Etta who took Jessie home with her & John went up in the evening. I was not so
well. I had a poor turn. Wm spent the evening at home.
Tues Aug 26 - Wm went to Clotilde to work. It is a fine day I wrote to Anna and
had a call from Mrs. Harding Peterson, my old friend arrived Social at Mrs.
Medcalf this evening. John & Jessie went. I called at Mr. McGills.
Wed Aug 27 - Merritt, Tallie & Gertie came to visit. They did not remain to
tea. John & Jessie went to Mrs. Manning's to tea and spent the evening. I staid
at Sunnyside til they came home. Showery & cool.
Thurs Aug 28 - Mrs. Hyde James & Charley came before dinner and remained all
night. Kate came over in the evening. There is great excitement of thieves in
the country. Horses and carriages being stolen. Men are out scouring the
country.
Fri Aug 29 - Jessie & I took dinner at Kate's with Anna Hyde. I rode home with
Uncle Benson, Angeline & Eliza came. Mrs Hyde went home. Uncle Benson staid. Wm
came home and Jessie with Kate visited at Mr Leonard Young's family, Mrs. Howe
being at home.
Sat Aug 30 - John went to Alburgh. Wm busy all day writing process? After
dinner I made cookies. Kate called over and made a lemon pie. Jessie called at
Mrs. McGills in the evening. We had a call from Mr. B. Johnston in the
evening.
Sun Aug 31 - A wet day. We did not go to church. Kate & Tom came over to tea.
Mr. R. C. Manning called in the evening.

Mon Sep 1 - I wrote to Emma, ripped up a dress & a quilt to turn. Spent the
afternoon with Kate. Wm went to Council. Jessie went to see Miss Gewey. John
came home at dark. He came by Champlain and took dinner at Emma's. We got our
invitation to John & Lottie's wedding.
Tues Sep 2 - We done a big washing. Had a call from Charles & Ann. I wrote to
Anna. It looks like rain.
Wed Sep 3 - Wm took Jessie to Covey Hill to meet Charles for Champlain. I had a
call from the Manning's on their way to the rock. I worked fixing only black
cashmere dress.
Thurs Sep 4 - Wm went to Burnside, then to St. Chrysostome, he came with Jessie
for a late dinner. I had a call from Mrs. Manning, Fred & his wife before
dinner.
Fri Sep 5 - I finished my dress and did a lot of darning. Made pies. Jessie &
Self visited at Wm. McGill's.
Sat Sep 6 - Wm & I went to Covey Hill. We found Aunt Mary very poorly. Hands
badly swollen. She cannot help herself. We called over to Sunnyside. Another
scare of a horse thief in this neighbourhood.
Sun Sep 7 - Communion Service. We all went to church. A very warm day. Aunt
Angeline & Uncle Benson called coming from church in the afternoon. Jessie went
to church again in the evening. Kate & Tom were here a little while.
Mon Sep 8 - Wm & John left very early for to catch the train at Ormstown. Wm
for St. Maritana, John for Montreal. A very warm day. They got home just dark.
Tues Sep 9 - After dinner, John drove Jessie and I to Cherubusco where we left
Luey. Jessie & I accompanied him so far as Champlain. He went on to Albourgh.
George & Maude met us at the station. Tom & Kate came just after we had our
tea.
Wed Sep 10 - after dinner we took the train to Alburgh. Saw John married to
Miss (Lottie) Vosburgh. Tom & Kate just got there as the ceremony commenced.
After seeing the bride & groom leave for their trip we came back to Champlain.
Staid all night. Everything went off nicely. They had a nice wedding.
Thurs Sep 11 - Jessie & I with Mary E. Graves came to Cherubusco and drove Luey
home. We were cold, it rained a little & the wind was high. We called on Mrs.
Manning. Saw Mrs. Gibert. Got a good warm cup of tea & came home quite
comfortably. Got dinner and had tea ready for Wm & George.
Fri Sep 12 - A very wet day. Had a call from John Graves. He & Jessie were both
disappointed in not getting to the Huntingdon Show. They cracked butternuts for
a cake. I went over to Kate for a little while.
Sat Sep 13 - I made pie & cakes, scones and baked beans. Stuffed and roasted
fowls. Kate came over & made butternut cake. John Graves went to Aubrey to meet
John & his bride. Tom & Kate came over to supper & welcome John & Lottie.

Mon Sep 15 - Jessie & Lottie washed. I did the other work. Made sauce & pie,
got dinner ready with some help. Dusted & wrote to Anna. Ironed in the
evening.
Tues Sep 16 - A wet day. I did not go to the show. I kept Mary & Anna Bruce for
Kate, and had a nice tea ready for them when they got home. Wm got hurt on the
show ground.
Wed Sep 17 - John & I called on Mrs. Wilding at Robert Fultons. I invited them
to tea. Fred, Tom & Kate came in the evening. Had a call from Merritt & Sallie,
also Sister Angeline & Benson to tea. Jessie hurt her foot.
Thurs Sep 18 - Lottie made catsup????, I fixed my blackberry cordial, put it
down cellar and worked all forenoon. Had a call from Daniel. Wm went to
Ormstown, his birthday, also Anna Bruce. Had a visit from Mr. & Mrs. Watt -
Jessie's foot quite sore.
Fri Sep 19 - Had a call from J. A. Fulton & Mr. Lovering before dinner. Uncle
John & Aunt Eliza visited us in the afternoon. We had a call from Miss Libbie
McGill. Lottie & I called on Aunt Betsy who is sick. We then took tea at Kate's
at seven o'clock. Wm & Self, John & Lottie, Jessie did not go.
Sat Sep 20 - John has gone and I am almost heart broken. They left at half past
3. Brother Charles came & staid until four o'clock. He & Gordon Hyde, Dr.
Fergusson and Tina took tea here. Jessie & I called at Sunnyside in the
evening.

Sat Sep 21 - Wm & self went to church. It was quite cold but pleasant. Jessie

Hill this evening to go to Ottawa with Mary in the morning.
Sun Sep 22 - We churned & washed. Had a man digging potatoes. A fine day. Kate
is weaning Anna Bruce. They called over a little while. We are very lonesome
for John. I wrote to him.
Mon Sep 23 - Ironed & made tomato butter. Sent letters to Anna & John. Kate
swept & dusted the Chamber for me and made biscuits for tea. Had Jerva digging
potatoes.
Wed Sep 24 - Wm. took me to St. Antoine to get a pair of boots. Could not find
any to suit. Very cold. Had some house plants brought in. Kate & the children
here to tea & spent the evening.
Thur Sep 25 - Received my first letter from John. Wm went to Ormstown. Kate &
Mary called over a few minutes after the mail came. Wm. got home at five then
helped Jerva unload a load of potatoes. A fine day. Churned the second time.
Fri Sep 26 - I dressed chickens. Made scones and raised cookies. Invited Mrs
Manning and Mrs. Hibbert to tea. They said they were engaged but would come
tomorrow.
Sat Sep 27 - Skimmed milked, washed pans, and was busy all forenoon. Got the
room ready for young Jerva who is to work a month. Kate & the children came to
tea. Mrs. Manning & Hibbert also. I called in the evening on Messers Egan & at
Mr. McGills.
Sun Sep 28 - Wm & I went to church. We took tea at Sunnyside. We miss John very
much.
Mon Sep 29. Wm & I washed. Kate went to Covey Hill. A lovely day
Tues Sep 30 - Ironed in the morning after dinner we visited Aunt Angeline. I
sent letter to Anna and one to John.

Wed Oct 1 - Kate & I went to Ladies Aid at Mrs. Gentle's. a lovely day. We
called on Mrs. Blair and Mrs. Parham. Saw Etta Dean Fulton sick. I paid Miss
Gowen two dollars and sixty five cents for Jessie.
Thur Oct 2 - I set our carnations enriched the lilly (Calle) and baked scones &
cookies, apples etc. Called on Mrs. Egan & went over to Sunnyside a little
while. Mended some shirts and did house work in general. Received a letter from
Emma, and John & Lottie.
Fri Oct 3 - I received a letter from Anna and sent a note in Kate's and papers
from Emma, also a letter in Kate's to Emma. I had Mrs. Egan & daughter, Mrs.
Terrin and Miss Julia Egan to tea from Montreal. We had a pleasant visit. They
staid until nine o'clock. Then crossed to Mr. McGill's.
Sat Oct 4 - I got my work done early, went over to see Kate a few minutes. Came
home & wrote a letter to Adam. Spent the afternoon reading the Ladies Journal.
Kate spent the evening with me.
Sun Oct 5 - Wm & self went to Russeltown Flatts to church. Took dinner with
Uncle Chas and Lonise. Jessie came home with us. Called at Uncle John's. had
Kate & Tom over to tea and had a good sing, but we miss John so much.
Mon Oct 6 - Wm went to Ormstown to survey the cemetery. I wrote to John. We had
a call from Mrs. Egan Gervais. Gathered in the pumpkins and drew some stones. A
very pleasant but cold day. A friend of Jessie's spent the evening here.
Tues Oct 7 - Jessie washed. I sent letter to Anna & papers to Stewart & John.
Wm. came home on account of the rain. I made sweet or ripe cucumber pickles.
Put up four pumpkins today.
Wed Oct 8 - Kate took me to St. Chrysostome. We did a lot of trading at
Lalond's. we also called on Brown & Lontaire. Got a letter from Emma. She is
coming tomorrow. Found Tina Fergusson here when we came home. She & the Dr.
took tea here. I made pumpkin pies. Went to bed tired.
Thurs Oct 9 - I got the house in order. Baked some and Wm. went to Cherubusco
for Emma & Mr. Moore & Maude. They got here for tea. We spent a pleasant
evening.
Fri Oct 10 - William went to Allan's Corners to work. Started early. I made
doughnuts before Mrs. Moore & Emma were ready for breakfast. Had a call from
brother Charles. Wm. came home.
Sat Oct 11 - Had a call from Miss McCort in the morning. Emma put the
________on my silk jacket. Were invited to Kate's for tea. Mrs. Burrows &
Carson came. Wm. came for me. They staid all night. Mrs. Moore, Burrows & I had
a nice visit. Jessie & Carson went over to Kate's. Emma came back with them.
Sun Oct 12 - I took Mrs. Moore & Emma to church. A lovely day. Mrs. Burrows &
Carson went home with Kate. Came over for tea. Jessie's young man took her to
church in the evening. Mrs. Moore was pleased to hear Mr. Watt.
Mon Oct 13 - A beautiful day. Wm went to Ormstown to work. Mrs. Moore & Maude
with self took a walk around the circle. Visited the sugar house. Emma and
Jessie spent the afternoon helping Kate. Emma slept with me. She took a stiff
neck. I rubbed her with electric ore.
Tues Oct 14 - A very wet day. Wm. got home in time for dinner. John & Lottie
came just as we got through to attend Kate's & Tom's wooden wedding. Wm & Mrs.
Watt called & went over also. We spent a very, very pleasant evening. John &
Lottie staid all night. We got a card from the hill that Mary was worse.
Wed Oct 15 - Wm & went to Covey Hill to see Mary, found her very bad. We got
home at three o'clock. brought a pig & a puppy for John from Uncle George.
Found Kate here with the children when we got home. Aunt Angeline & Benson had
been here to dinner. John, Lottie & Jessie were invited to Mrs. Mannings to
tea. Ella McGill came to call on them. Did not stay long.
Thur Oct 16 - We got word of Aunt Mary's death so got an early dinner and went
over. John & Lottie went with us on their way home & called a little while Emma
remained for the funeral. Mrs. Moore went home. We staid at the hill all
night.
Fri Oct 17 - Wm & I came home about ten o'clock. I got a letter from Anna. A
very wet day. George came in the evening. He had got his tea at Covey Hill.
Annie Hyde died with blood poisoning from having a tooth extracted.
Sat Oct 18 - We all went to Aunt Mary's funeral. Wm & self took dinner at John
McFees. George & Emma, Tom & Kate & Jessie took dinner at Aunt Angelines. We
heard that Annie Hyde was dead. I took tea at Kate's with George & Emma. The
roads are very muddy.
Sun Oct 19 - Wm, Jessie & self went to church. George & Emma went home early
for fear of rain, which did come on at two o'clock. I feel very lonesome for
John & Emma. Jessie had a friend call in the evening.
Mon Oct 20 - Wm assisted and Jessie washed. I made sweet pickles. Did housework
all day. Cleaned the sewing machine. Made myself an apron. In the evening,
wrote to Anna. Mrs. Hyde buried at half past two in Montreal. Aunt Angeline
went in to the funeral.
Tues Oct 21 - A lovely day. Had white frost last night. Wm went to a council at
the Town Hall. I had my foot measured for a pair of boots and we took tea at
Brother Merritt's. Uncle Benson took dinner here.
Wed Oct 22 - a lovely day. Wm went to Ormstown to work. I have a very severe
cold. Maggie Breslin spent the evening here. We put up four pumpkins today.
Jessie slept with me.
Thur Oct 23 - My cold is a little better. I made Pumpkin Pies. Wrote a card to
Emma and one to John. Jessie is spending the day with Etta Fulton. She went up
with the mail. A lovely day
Fri Oct 24 - Miss McCort came to make me a cloak & dress. I have a cold & bad
cough but assisted all I could.
Sat Oct 25 - My cold is much worse & I am not well. It is hard to keep up. Miss
Anna McCort & Bessie Launders spent the evening here & took Miss McCort home.
Sun Oct 26 - Cough so bad could not attend church, Wm either. He has the cold
so Miss Jessie went to church with Kate in the morning & in the evening with
B.C.M. Miss McCort rode up with Mr. Beattie. Tom & Kate took tea here with the
children.
Mon Oct 27 - Miss McCort got through and went over to sew for Kate. I am just a
little better. I wrote to John, Aunt Ann & Louise and to Anna in the evening to
be ready for to send tomorrow. Jessie also is writing letters to her friends.
Tues Oct 28 - Went over to Kate's a little while. I wrapped up good, the wind
was cold. She made me a cup of coffee. Jessie & crocheted all the evening.
Wed Oct 29 - Jessie & I went to Brother Charles's to see them & get particulars
of Annie's death, poor Annie. Read us a lot of letters received from friends &
her own children. We had a good account of her sickness. We got home before
dark.
Thurs Oct 30 - I got ready to go to Rockburn with Jessie & take in Mrs.
Coonly's Ladies Aid on our way home but rain prevented us from going. It turned
out a fine evening. Sorry we did not go, puzzled my brain all day, picking out
a crocheted pattern of lace. I received a letter from John.
Fri Oct 31 - Wm took his map??? To Ormstown. I had a call from Aunt Betsy.
Jessie spent the day at Mrs. J. Manning's and the evening at Mr. B. Fulton's. I
was over to Sunnyside a little while & had a cup of coffee with Kate. She spent
the evening here. Tom worked on the church grounds in the afternoon.
NOV
Sat Nov 1 - Jessie & I went to Sammy Orr's to visit with them & Uncle William &
Aunt Mary. We called at Uncle George's on our way home. At bed time I took
Neuralgia in my side. Wm was up most of the night with me. Sweat it & I got
easier before day, the result of a bad cold.
Sun Nov 2 - Jessie staid with me. Wm & Tom went to church. I am not very well
yet but Wm. & I kept Anna & Mary in the evening and let Tom & Kate go to hear
Mr. Beattie. Jessie went to church too. A wet evening. They rode in road
carts.
Mon Nov 3 - Wm went to Counsel. Jessie went to see Gertie Gordon. I called on
Kate a little while. I had a call from Charles & Ann on their way from Daniels.
A very cold day.
Tues Nov 4 - Wm went to Lacolle. Mary T. Edwards visited here a little, while
Kate & Tom with the children took tea here. Jessie & I were alone all evening.
Wed Nov 5 - I made doughnuts and pie for Thanksgiving tomorrow. Jessie visited
Mrs. Frier with Kate. I took my tea all alone. Jessie came home little after
dark then Wm. came. I am very much puzzled in a crocheted pattern. Wm brought
sixteen cakes of electric soap for one dollar from John McFee in Hemmingford.
Thurs Nov 6 - Thanksgiving Day. Jessie & self went to Rockburn to visit at Dr.
Fergusson's. We got dinner there & took tea at Frank Cantwell's. We also called
on Mrs. Stacy & Mrs. Craik and the stores at the centre. Got home at dark.
Received letters from John and Emma. Jessie made nut candy. Ella came to spend
the evening. She assisted Jessie. RCM came too.
Fri Nov 7 - Jessie & went to St. Chrysostome. She got a hat, I got a bonnet. We
took dinner with Miss Monteath. Mr. McFee is very poorly. Quite helpless. We
called on Christy and Miss Stewart. Called at Uncle Clarke's, Uncle John's &
Aunt Angeline's to say good-bye as she is to leave for Washington next week.
Etta and Fred Fulton spent the evening here, Kate too. She received Etta and
got tea ready before we got home.
Sat Nov 8 - Jessie & RCM went to Alburgh to visit John & Lottie. The house
seems very lonely. I cannot think of doing anything. Wm & I spent the evening
all alone.
Sun Nov 9 - a very wet day. Wm went to church with Tom. I spent the day with
Kate. Wm & I took our dinner & tea there. Came home at dark. I have worn my new
boots and find them comfortable. The wind is very high.
Mon Nov 10 - I washed flannels. Wm churned, I dressed a fowl for dinner, had
dumplings & a __________. Louise came before noon. Jessie did not get home
until dark from Alburgh. John came too. Kate & Tom came over & spent the
evening, and Ben Johnston.
Tues Nov 11 - John took up the carpet & cleaned it. I put it down again. Louise
& Jessie packed Jessie's trunk then helped me to wash the double windows. John
put them on. Kate invited us all to tea. Louise went home. We Gordon Girls
called at Kate's, so did Aunt Betsy. RCM spent the evening here.
Wed Nov 12 - John took Jessie to Cherubusco en route for Laxtons river, thence
to Oak Hill, thence to Washington. William went to Huntingford. Tom & Kate here
to dinner. Kate staid with me all afternoon. Tom came over & visited with John
then went home with Kate. I shall miss Jessie.
Thur Nov 13 - John left for Alburgh. Etta Fulton called to invite up to tea. I
am so lonesome. Aunt Angeline & Aunt Betsy came to spend the day. We had an old
fashioned visit. Angeline went home before tea. Eliza staid with me.
Fri Nov 14 - Eliza & I are having a good visit. Her knee is sore. It is a
lovely day, warm & clear. Kate called over in the afternoon a few minutes.
Walter called Eliza, traded some with him. I got some tea. Had a letter from
Anna, Wm came home.
Sat Nov 15 - Wm went to Ormstown with Daniel. Eliza & self visited, had dinner
alone. Charley came for her at two o'clock. I went over to Sunnyside. Mrs.
Fryer was there. Came home at four o'clock. Wm came soon after. A wet snow
falling. I spent the greater part of the evening alone. (weekly summary. I
bought 3 lb of green tea, some black, from Walter McFarlane. I wrote to Tay's
wife on the 12 of November)
Sun Nov 16 - Fine morning. We went to church and heart Rev Mr. Hay preach. Mr.
Watt is sick. Tom, Kate & the children spent the afternoon and evening here.
Anna took her first step today and feels very proud.
Mon Nov 17 - I washed, Wm. churned. It commenced raining about ten o'clock.
Kate called in the afternoon. I got five lbs of cheese from Mr. N. Farham. I
wrote to Anna.
Tues Nov 18 - Snow fell about two inches last night, the trees & shrubs are
loaded. The look beautiful but soon melted away. It is very slushy under foot.
Wm got the colt home. I wrote to Emma and had a letter from her. Sent papers to
Jessie at Laxton's River.
Wed Nov 19 - I polished the cooking stove & scrubbed the kitchen floor. Had Mr.
Elrton, the Secretary of Agriculture, to dinner. I had a call from Mrs. J.
McGill and got a letter from John & Lottie.
Thur Nov 20 - Washed the cupboards, chairs & tale, dusted, scoured knives &
flat irons. Kate came after noon with the children and staid until nine
o'clock. I finished knitting yellow strip for cushion.
Fri Nov 21 - I ironed, baked pies, wrote to Miss Monteath and visited Kate. I
got a letter from Anna and spent the evening at Mrs. McGills. Mrs. Casidy &
Beaudin were there.
Sat Nov 22 - I kept Mary & Anna. Kate went with Wm to St. Chrysostome. I spent
the evening with Kate. Wm & Tom went to St. Antoine. A beautiful light night.
Sun Nov 23 - We went to church & took dinner with Kate, then they came over and
had tea with us & stayed a little while. Cold & pleasant day.
Mon Nov 24 - Our marriage day 38 years ago. I washed, Wm churned, Kate hung out
the clothes, butchered the pigs. Had Daniel, Tom and James Donly to dinner.
Kate helped me to take the lard off, worked the butter for me. The letter I
sent Saturday came back today. My mistake to not put a stamp on.
Tues Nov 25 - I ironed, tried out the lard and sent a letter to Anna. Uncle
George came to dinner. He & Wm went to Huntingdon. A wet afternoon. My foot
troubles me. Almira did not come so I went over and staid at Sunnyside all
night. We had a good visit. Maude's birthday.
Wed Nov 26 - Tom came over & did the chores. I made a fire, then I came over. I
wrote to Tay, it being his birthday. Kate came over a little while. Cleaned the
pig's feet. Wm & George came about six o'clock.
Thur Nov 27 - Very cold. Wm at home all day & we made sausages and went over to
Tom's in the evening.
Fri Nov 28 - Made myself a silk hood to wear over by bonnet. Did several useful
things. Wm went to St. Antoine got his new clothes.
Sat Nov 29 - I was busy doing housework until after dinner. Moped, made cakes,
etc. Wm churned. I finished the Caterpillar cushion in the evening.
Sun Nov 30 - We went to church. It is thawing. Turned cold towards evening and
snowed. I called on Mrs. Boda, she is getting better. Kate came over a little
while before dark. A very dark afternoon. Would need a lamp to read by at half
past three.
DEC
Mon Dec 1 - I wrote to Tina Fergusson & John in the afternoon to Anna. I spent
the evening at Sunnyside. Ella, Fred & Miss Cort & Willie Parham was there.
After I came home I wrote to Jessie.
Tues Dec 2 - I wrote to Emma. Tom went to Champlain. I had a visit from Charley
& Gina. They had just gone when Dr. Fergusson and Tina came. She is going to
stay until Friday. Thermometer at 6 below zero. So cold Wm did not go to work.
Kate came over to stay all night.
Wed Dec 3 - After breakfast Kate went home. After dinner, Gina Fergusson & I
went over to spend the afternoon. We had pancakes for tea, we had to wash in
the snow home. It was so deep, had snowed all day. Tom got home from Champlain
at dark, or seven o'clock.
Thur Dec 4 - Gina made a maple sugar cake and a cream cake. We jointly made
pumpkin pies. Got through baking before dinner. In the evening stoned raisins
for our Xmas Cakes. Gina and I had a nice visit, a very stormy day. We did not
see Kate.
Fri Dec 5 - Gina & I visited all day crocheting and knitting. Thomas & Ella
McGill came and spent the evening. The Dr. called for Gina about eight o'clock.
He was in a sleigh. It was pretty cold.
Sat Dec 6. Charlie McFee brought us a quarter of beef. Did various things in
the forenoon. In the afternoon, Kate took me up to call on Mrs. W.W. Gordon and
see the new baby. We went to the shoemaker & Mr. Thorp's & bought some Xmas
presents, then we called to see Mrs. B. Johnstone who is very ill. I am fifty
nine years old today and I received a present from each of my daughters.
Sun Dec 7 - Wm & I went to Church in a cutter. It was Sacrament Sunday and
there was only a few out, pretty cold. We had dinner at Sunnyside, then they
came over, had tea and spent the evening.
Mon Dec 8 - I washed & mopped. Wm cut up the quarter of been we got from C.
McFee and chored around all day. Very cold and clear. Sleighs are running.
Tues Dec 9 - Uncle George came in time for dinner, then went to Huntingdon with
William. Ella McGill staid all night with me. I wrote to John. I received a
letter from Jessie.
Wed Dec 10 Kate came over and we made our Christmas Cakes. Had good luck I
think. Received a present from Jessie for my birthday. George & Wm came back
about eight o'clock. It snowed nearly all day.
Thur Dec 11 - I was very busy all forenoon. Cleaned the kitchen chamber and
John's room. Wm went to Land of Cakes but did not work. Came home at noon. We
had a call from Mr. Watt. Mrs. Casidy had a son.
Fri Dec 12 - Kate & I visited Etta Fulton. Tome came for tea. A very cold day.
We got home at ten. I got a note from Clara Manning that her Mother was to
visit me next day.
Sat Dec 13 - I mopped the kitchen, worked butter and did several things. Mrs.
Manning came with the mail and we had a real good visit. Rob came for her at
eight o'clock. I have not seen Kate today.
Sun Dec 14 - Wm & I went to church, also Tom and Kate. They came home with us
and took dinner. They went home before tea. It snowed all afternoon. It is one
below freezing at eight o'clock PM.
Mon Dec 15 - I put new ledges on Doylies and fixed the tidies neatly. Wrote to
Anna and spent the evening at Sunnyside. I had a letter from Emma. Wm took the
clock up to Mrs. Adams to be repaired.
Tues Dec 16 - I polished the double stove, sent Anna a letter. I had a letter
from Aunt Sallie this morning. Aunt Eliza and Charley McFee called on their way
to Chateaugay.
Wed Dec 17 - Kate came & kept house for me in the afternoon. I went and called
on Mrs. Wilson. Papa went to the Agricultural meeting. I got my glasses changed
& spend the evening at Kate's.
Thur Dec 18 - I received a letter from John & Lottie. I wrote to them also. Wm
went for the clock up to Mr. Adams. Kate came over & staid all night. Tom went
to Champlain, we sent a box to Anna. I made mince meat.
Fri Dec 19 - Kate helped me make ____ plums pudding. I boiled it six hours & a
half. Tom came home at night, he brought me a letter from Emma. Kate rode home
with the mail & the children. It is very cold, windy day. Ther, below zero.
Sat Dec 20 - I baked eleven mince pies and fried doughnuts. Wm & Tom went to
St. Chrysostome. Wm took 2 gallons of syrup to Chas McFee. Kate took a gallon
also. Wm brought home a wash tub & a goose for Christmas.
Sun Dec 21 - Tom took us to church in his new sleigh. The wind south. Commenced
to rain when we got home & rained all afternoon & evening. Kate, Tom & children
came over. Kate got the tea and did up the dishes. Mr. Johnson very bad. The
Drs. Are to tap her this afternoon.
Mon Dec 22 - Kate did my washing & mopped the floor. I have a pain in my left
side. I got a letter from Jessie, * wrote to her & Anna.
Tues Dec 23 - I ironed, worked butter, washed windows, did various things, made
pumpkin pies & rode over to Sunnyside with Charley McGilton. Spent the evening
with Kate. I stuffed a goose, received a lace scarf from Anna for Xmas present.
I wrote to Anna.
Wed Dec 24 - I stuffed a turkey. We took a tea dinner, expecting Emma & George
to supper. Tom went to Cherubusco to meet them. I got a letter from John &
Lottie. They cannot come for xmas. Emma & Maude came. George was here when we
got home from the Xmas tree. Maude & Mary spoke their pieces nicely.
Thurs Dec 25 - We had Mr & Mrs. Watt for dinner. Tom, Kate and the children,
Geo, Emma & Maude. Geo. Went home before tea, so did Mr. & Mrs. Watt. I got
some lovely presents.
Fri Dec 26 - Wm went to Covey Hill. Emma & I visited. Had dinner alone. I sent
card & papers to Anna.
Sat Dec 27 - I ironed all day. Wm at home. Emma painted house. Kate came over
in the afternoon, with the children & Tom came for tea & spent the evening.
Sun Dec 28 - Too cold to go to Church. Thermometer eight below zero. Tom
harness up & took Emma, Maude & I over for the day and we had ice cream and
Xmas cake before we came home. He brought us back at eight o'clock. Young's
Hotel burned in the evening half past nine.
Mon Dec 29 - It is warmer and snowing all day. I wrote John & Jessie. Emma & I
visited all day. Fred & Etta Fulton spent the evening here. Tom, Kate & the
children also. We had a lunch, hot coffee, etc.
Tues Dec 30 - Thermometer twelve below zero. Slept beside the stove. Emma &
Maude here. Emma painted the birds for me.
Wed Dec 31 - After dinner, Wm went to the shoemaker with my boots. Very cold.
Kate & the children came over a little while and invited us all over to dinner
tomorrow.
